I recently purchased three metal buckets from Hobby Lobby for my kitchen command center. I am going to use them to store the markers for my dry erase board and other knick knacks so they are not laying on the kitchen bar.
The only thing I didn’t like about the buckets was that they were too shiny. I have done a lot of research on how to age galvanized metal and tried a few of the techniques. I did try using Lysol toilet bowl cleaner and was not impressed with the results. What worked for me was using straight vinegar.
This is what I started with.
The first thing I did was to take some steel wool and rub the bucket down. It took some of the shiny finish off. To get the aged look, I just wet a rag with vinegar and wiped down the buckets. I wiped them down every thirty to sixty minutes. You can also fill a container and soak your buckets in vinegar, but I didn’t have enough on hand to do it that way. Here it is after a couple wipe downs.
It took me a couple days to get the look I wanted. I would do other things around the house and stop for a second to wipe them down. It’s not a hard project, but it is time consuming.
After I achieved the look I was going for, I printed some vinyl numbers using my silhouette. I used it as a stencil and painted the numbers on the bucket.
After it dried, I rubbed steel wool on it just to rough it up a little.
I think these buckets are going to be a nice addition to my kitchen command center.
